T5 Bus Campervan Conversion

The interior campervan conversion that you can see below was carried out by Calypso Campers in Salisbury.

VW T5 Bus CampervanCalypso Campers have an excellent reputation for doing bespoke VW interior campervan conversions which have featured in both magazines and in books including a number that appeared in the new book 'VW Camper Inspirational Interiors' by David Eccles.

Before Calypso Campers converted my T5 Bus I went along to see them in Salisbury, armed with a pile of books and magazine cuttings, where Jon the owner went through with me what I wanted doing.

Below you can see what a great job Calypso did with the conversion:-

Interior DesignInterior Design
The interior design you can see here was based on the classic campervan layout to give maximum amount of space and flexibly which is what you need for a family of 4 and a dog.

It included a Kitchen Unit down the side with Sink, Hob, and Fridge. Towards the rear there is a Wardrobe, Top Box, and Rock & Roll Bed with storage underneth.

Interior DesignThe designed used a Beech effect ply with a Grey Trim. Blue is used for the side and head linings and a darker blue that matches the seats is used for the curtains.

The seats are in Blue/Grey using vinyl to make it simpler to clean up the mess the children and the dog leave behind.

SMEV Sink and Hob CoboSMEV Sink and Hob Combo
For the sink and hob a SMEV sink and hob combo was used.

This gives a nice modern feel to the kitchen unit with a black glass work surface when the top is closed.

A wardrobe is fitted at the rear with access from both the side and from under the rear tailgate.

The wardrobe unit also houses the Zig Mains Hookup Unit, which includes mains, 12 volt, battery levels, and charging unit.

Rock and Roll BedRock and Roll Bed
A rock and roll bed is used for both seating and sleeping. This complements the 2 person bed in the Reimo Elevating Roof allowing for 4 people to sleep comfortably.

When used for seating the Rock and Roll bed has 3 seat belts allowing 2 adults or 3 children to be seated.

Here a sliding table that attaches to the kitchen unit was used. There was a number of reasons for choosing this design over a table that attaches to a poll in the middle of the floor, the main being not wanting to crack my shines when strapping the kids in.

Reupholstered Captains Front SeatsReupholstered Captains Front Seats
The front seats have been reupholstered to match the Rock and Roll Bed in the rear retaining the same colours throughout.

The Grey/Blue colours used in the upholstery take their inspiration from the same colours used in the VW California.

Front Swivel Seat with SafeFront Swivel Seat with Safe
The Front Passenger Seat is fitted to a swivel seat base with a safe which was from Cheshire Motor Caravans. This allows both the storage of items safely under the seat and the seat to swivel round 180° to face the rear.

Eberspächer Diesel Air HeaterEberspächer Diesel Air Heater
An Eberspächer Airtonic D2 Diesel Air Heater was fitted under the drivers seat by Kruegger in New Milton and boxed in by Calypso Campers.

This is ideal in winter as you can use it when driving and have a warm camper without wait for the engine to get warm.

Zig UnitZig Unit
The Zig unit controls the electric to the campervan for both 12 volt eletrics from the leasure battery and the 230 volt mains.

The Zig unit has both RCD, fuses, van and leasure battery idicators, battery charging unit, and a plarity warning light.

Reimo Elevating Roof and BedReimo Elevating Roof and Bed
A Reimo Elevating Roof was fitted by M.A.D. Workshop in Bristol, who have a very good reputation when it comes to fitting Reimo Roofs to T4's and T5's.

The Elevating Roof also includes a bed large enough for 2 adults, making my camper into a 4 berth large enough for the whole family.

A safety net has also been fitted to the roof bed to allow the children to us it without fear they will fall down.

DVD PlayerDVD Player
A 9.1" DVD Player was added to the back for both entertainment while camping and also to keep the children quite in the back while on long journeys. The DVD Player is mounted behind the drivers seat rather than in the middle so that it can be swiveled round for everyone to view while camping.
